Twin tower attack coloring book came under fire for scaring kids

FEMA pulls 'Scary' coloring book from web site

The plane that crashed into New York’s Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001 was no child’s play, but the U.S. government agency charged with disaster preparedness decided it should feature prominently in a coloring book for kids.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency removed the controversial coloring book from its website after it came under fire for endorsing a coloring book for children that included pictures of disasters such as fires, floods and terrorist attacks. The book produced by the Freeborn County Crisis Response Team was pulled from the FEMA website last week.
The image that especially upset a great number of people was on the showing the Twin Towers, with one tower already on fire and a plane approaching the other tower.
A similar image was inside the book for children to color.
The coloring book “A Scary Thing Happened” was created as a tool for children to use with a responsible parent or adult to help cope with disasters, Rose Olmsted, coordinator of the Freeborn County Crisis Response Team told the Albert Lea tribune.
FEMA has explained it did not intend to scare children but rather to give them an insight into the disasters the see or hear about in daily life.
The agency also published a book of stories about children who have experienced accidents or natural disaster.
FEMA, which has been incorporated into the Department of Homeland Security, is charged with ensuring that the U.S. is able to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from natural and manmade disasters. The Freeborn County Crisis Response Team, which created the book, is made up of volunteers who are trained to go out into the community to be supportive to groups of people who have been traumatized by disaster.
