Like many other rivers in Bangladesh, Buriganga river suffers from the dumping of millions of tons of human and industrial waste which has turned its waters into pitch black. Over the past seven months from November to April, virtually no water but only stinky mucky liquid flows in the gradually narrowing rivers - the Buriganga, Shitalakshya, Turag and Balu - as no governments could stop discharge of liquid waste into them, according to a recent study.
